Color has always been my medium, and my ultimate inspiration. I have mixed paint all my life, studied color theory, and developed a keen appreciation for the complexity of color and its relationships.
My lifelong involvement with art is rooted in my family, and growing up in an environment filled with modern art and design of all kinds. My grandfather was Duncan Phillips, the art collector and founder of the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. My grandmother and several family members have been artists.
Designing has always been an important part of my life. After studying art history and philosophy at Vassar, I painted and exhibited my artwork in DC, and then moved to New York, where I designed sets for small theaters. Later, I freelanced extensively as an architectural watercolorist. I attended Skowhegan School of art, and later went to London for my MFA in painting. Back in New York, I pursued graphic and web design, and worked for several magazines, including Vanity Fair. All during this time I have kept an active exhibition schedule of my paintings, prints and other projects, all of which feed into my rug designs.
